Living Love

Published on: Sunday May 25th, 2025

They say that Alzheimer’s strips us from our filters and leaves the soul bare.

And, I agree.

My mother’s gentle, loving soul radiates from her. Mom’s physical and mental abilities have been severely impacted by her illness, but her ability to show affection is intact. My mother’s spirit is with us. She is a happy woman who continues to make us all feel appreciated.

This evening, as the sun is low, we are in the driveway of my parent’s home after a day of appointments. Mom is struggling to get out of the car. She acknowledges me and Dad by nodding. Leaning on Dad and grasping my hand, she pushes herself out of the car. She doesn’t speak- she can’t say much- but her eyes and soft smile show me she can feel our love through this process, also.

These everyday moments help us continue to connect. Mom always told us she loved us and showed her love in a multitude of ways. My hope is that she can always feel our love for her as we ‘journey through Alzheimer’s’ together.
